As writers (and I am sure many of you are writers), we need to get our books out there where potential readers will see them. One way to do that is with book giveaways. In this article, I will review Goodreads giveaways and how they work.
An advance word - Goodreads giveaways are not free. They are paid for.
In a Goodreads Giveaway, authors can give away up to 100 Kindle or 100 print books. Two packages are offered: the Standard package is priced at $119, and the Premium package is priced at $599. You can see the difference in the packages here.
It is important to note that Goodreads Giveaways are available only in the US and Canada.
For promotional purposes, Goodreads has created two social sharing graphics, one for Facebook and one for Instagram.
CONTEST!!!Â
I am running a contest from January through March for new subscribers, both free and paid. Prizes are: "Murder At The Ponchartrain", by Kathleen Kaska; "Lemon Curd Killer", by Laura Childs; "Reading Like A Writer: A Guide For People Who Love Books And For Those Who Want To Write Them", by Francine Prose; and "Writing Down The Bones - Freeing The Writer Within". by Natalie Goldberg. Winners must reside in the continental United States.
Please note: This is a contest that I am running here on Substack. It is not a Goodreads Giveaway.
What Should We Be Asking Ourselves Before Deciding To Do A Giveaway?
It is a good idea to be clear on why we are doing a giveaway and what we expect to get from it. The following questions will help determine where a giveaway falls in our promotional plan. These questions are aimed at paid giveaways.
What purpose does this giveaway serve? Do you want to get your name as an author out to a wider audience? Do you want to get this specific book out to a wider audience? Are you using a giveaway to make sales? Do you want to see people talking about your book? Are you looking to build an e-mail list? Are you looking for more book reviews?
What are your expectations? Do you expect to cover the cost of the giveaway through book sales? Are you looking to connect with your readers? Are you looking for a wider reader audience?
I would love to hear your comments on Goodreads Giveaways. Please share your thoughts.
